With a heavy heart, I mourn the passing of our beloved Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, who has joined his ancestors at the age of 90. This is a deeply striking loss, touching the sacred ancestral throne that has moulded Ibadan for centuries with wisdom and strength. Kabiyesi’s time on the throne was rooted in courage and uncommon dedication. His reign, though brief, carried the weight of a legacy built through decades of service to Nigeria in various capacities—be it as a leader or a guardian of our traditions—leaving an imprint on the institution of Ibadan’s traditional heritage.

To all sons and daughters of Ibadan, I extend my deepest sympathies on this shocking demise, especially as we celebrated Kabiyesi’s 90th birthday just two days ago. This sudden transition leaves us in sorrow, yet it honours the rich history of our land. I specially greet the Ibadan Traditional Council, the government and people of Oyo State, and all friends and admirers of our great monarch, urging us to find solace in the unity that his life inspired. His passing is a call to stand together, to uphold the values he cherished, and to remember the peace and progress he fought for during his time among us.

Oba Olakulehin’s life was truly that of service and resilience, illuminating Ibadanland with his gentle yet firm leadership. His courage on the throne steadied our various communities and neighbours through challenges, while his years of devotion to Nigeria enriched our national fabric. The traditional institution he led with dignity stands taller because of him, a symbol of order and pride that will endure. We mourn a father, a peacemaker, and a custodian of our culture, whose voice brought harmony to our streets and hope to our hearts. His legacy of unity and progress will forever echo in the hills of Ibadan and beyond.

We bid farewell to our great King, I offer glowing tributes to a life well-lived, a reign that honoured our ancestors, and a spirit that will guide us still. Let us hold dear the lessons of his wisdom, his commitment to peace, and his love for his people. I pray for strength for his family, the Traditional Council, and all of Oyo State as we navigate this loss. May Kabiyesi’s soul find rest among his forebears, and may Ibadanland continue to thrive in the light of his enduring legacy.
